CDM upsets Mater Dei in season finale 9-8 in OT

Junior Logan Ip scored the game winner in overtime to defeat # 2 Mater Dei 9-8
Logan Ip (JR/MID), off a two-man dodge and dump play behind the goal with Lucas Newton (JR/MID), scored with 1:37 remaining in overtime to lead #5 CDM to an upset win over #2 Mater Dei 9-8. With the win, the Sea Kings end the regular-season with a 12-3 record and will begin their CIF Southern Section playoff run on Friday, May 28 at home. CDM handed Mater Dei just its second loss of the season, the first coming back on April 15 against #1 Loyola (Los Angeles).

"Wins like this are what our CDM lacrosse program is all about," commented CDM head coach. "It's just a bunch of neighborhood kids playing with their friends and trying to compete at the highest level. No one is recruiting them, no one is offering them anything other than an opportunity to play in big games and make memories with their childhood buddies. It is meaningful to them and it is incredibly special, and I am so grateful to be a part of it."

Fellow junior Ty Caffarelli led all CDM scorers with three goals and an assist. Sophomore Gavin Gossen came up big for the Sea Kings in the second half, assisting on a fourth quarter goal at 9:23 to cut the Monarch lead to 8-6, and then adding two consecutive goals to tie the game at 8 and send it into the extra period. Gossen's second goal came with just :33 remaining in regulation.

The biggest story of the day, however, might have been the CDM defense. Mater Dei came into the game averaging nearly 14 goals per game, they left with just 8 on the day. Most notably, they went scoreless in the fourth quarter, despite having a man advantage twice. CDM played a patient, yet aggressive style of defense and frustrated the Monarchs when it mattered most.

"Tim (CDM assistant coach Tim Cassi) does such a great job with our defense and goalies. They are always so incredibly well-prepared and today all of their hard work and Tim's trust in them really paid off. Believe me, it pays off for our offense too. Our kids go against them every day in practice and they make us earn every inch."

CDM ends its regular season with a record of 13-2 and as Sunset League Champions (5-0). Next up for the Sea Kings will be the winner of a CIF Southern Section Wildcard game between Agoura and West Ranch (Tues., 5/25). CDM begins its playoff run at home on Friday, May 28 at home (Game Time TBD).
