Sea Kings fall to #1 Loyola 9-6

Head Coach G.W. Mix discusses strategy during a timeout in CDM's 9-6 loss at Loyola
CDM's magical run in the 2021 CIF Division I playoffs came to an end on Friday afternoon with a 9-6 loss to #1 Loyola.

Loyola jumped out to a 3-0 lead and several Sea King attempts to narrow the margin fell just short. At one point early in the fourth quarter, CDM closed to within 6-5, but the Cubs scores just five seconds later to increase their lead to two goals. That was where the differential remained until the hosts scored an empty net goal with a minute remaining.

"What a great run we had," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "This was such a special group of young men. To see where we wound up after all we had been through since the school year began was incredible. These kids pulled off some major wins - Torrey Pines, Mater Dei, and St. Margaret's, despite losing our starting goalie before the Yorba Linda game and having a few key players out with injuries at inoppertune times. We came up just a little short. It was awesome to be a part of it. I can't wait to do it all over again. Public high school lacrosse is really special. You can't buy it. You can't beat it."

With the loss, CDM falls to 14-4 on the season. After impressive wins down the stretch (Torrey Pines, Mater Dei and St. Margaret's), the Sea Kings will likely finish the year ranked in the top three in CIF Southern Section Division I and the top ten in the State.

The 2021 CIF playoffs were somewhat of a L.A. Riptide (Major League Lacrosse) reunion. CDM head coach G.W. Mix served as the team's first and only president and general manager from 2005-2008. In Round 1, CDM faced former Riptide midfielder Sean Lindsay's Agoura team. In the Quarter-Finals, it was Riptide defenseman Brian Kelly's St. Margaret's squad that fell to the Sea Kings. In the Semi-Finals, CDM lost to Loyola, coached by Riptide short-stick defensive midfielder Jimmy Borell.

"It hit me as I was reflecting on our run in the playoffs on our bus ride back from Loyola," commented Mix. "I thought wow, that's kinda crazy that all three teams we faced were coached by former Riptide players. It was a proud moment. It shows what a positive impact our professional team had on the growth and development of lacrosse in Southern California."
